ARARA presents...
The illustrated presentation will provide a brief history of documented rock art observations in the state of Georgia and surrounding states. It will also present information on recording and conservation techniques, the physiographic and stylistic distribution of recorded petroglyphs and pictographs in the southeastern United States, AMS and stylistic chronologies of motifs in the region, significance assessments, ethno-historical informed interpretations, and rock art site and landscape management strategies. Johannes (Jannie) Loubser was awarded a PhD in 1989 by the University of the Witwatersrand for his archaeological and ethnographic work on the early history of Venda-speaking people in southern Africa. In the same year he completed a course in rock art conservation and management in Australia, co-presented by the Getty Conservation Institute and the University of Canberra. After creating and heading the Department of Rock Art at the National Museum in South Africa in 1987, Loubser and his family emigrated to the United States of America in late 1993. As a contract archaeologist and rock art specialist based in Atlanta, Georgia, (first at New South Associates, Inc and then at Stratum Unlimited, LLC) Loubser has worked on archaeology and rock art projects in states throughout the American mainland, Baja California in Mexico, and Alberta in Canada. He also worked on projects in Bolivia, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. Most of Loubser's work involves rock art recording, graffiti mitigation, and writing management plans, but he also conducts excavations when necessary.
